Minute Man Park Lexington, MA

9 Aug

I stayed around Boston for the first weekend all summer and I actually had a great time! I am from Maine. Mainers spend the summer at the beach and at the lake. We don’t stay in the city and sweat! So I’ve been getting away every weekend and it finally caught up with me. I don’t own a car, so I bus it to Maine every weekend and I was sick of the bus (Concord Coach is HORRIBLE).

This weekend my friend and I decided to explore something outside of the city. We went to Minute Man Park in Lexington, MA.

The Minute Man Park is where the American Revolution began and is filled with tons of history and fun trails. We went there to go for a run/walk but also ended up going to the visitors center and watched a multimedia presentation called the Road to Revolution. It awesome presentation about the beginning of the Revolution and the history of the area. It was actually really interesting, and I recommend hitting up the visitors center and watching this film if you ever go to the park.

Next up we got our exercise on! The trails were fun! Some were flat, and some were like hiking. We did a lot of running/walking, and in between a did a bunch of strength moves like squats, pushups, dips, etc. That’s my favorite thing about working out outside… I can always get some fun strength moves in! Plus you can’t beat the fun scenery! Walking on the trails was cool, but I also got a bit of a spooky feeling too. We had just watched  a film that talked about all of the people that died on the trails so it was kind of eerie! If you are ever in the Lexington area, you should definitely stop by the park for some fun and free entertainment.

Staying on Track in the Summer

27 Jul

Welcome to my first post on my new blog! To find out more about me and my blog please check out the about me section.

I don’t know about you, but I have been SO busy this summer! I have been traveling every weekend since Memorial Day and have only one weekend left this summer that I am planning on staying in the city. I figured what better thing to write about for my first post than staying on track during your vacations/getaways. The things I struggle with the most on vacation are workouts, eating, and drinking!

*Work it out!

Go for a swim or do water aerobics

Go for a walk/run on a nature trail or along the beach

Create your own mini boot camp on the beach! Find a bench and do pushups, squats, dips, etc and then run back and forth on the beach

Try to workout in the AM. That way you are done for the day!

Do sprints! When I am pressed for time but want to squeeze in a quality calorie burning workout I sprint 2 telephone poles and then walk one. It is a great workout and you will feel it the next day

Know that you are not going to be perfect. I usually workout 5 times a week doing zumba, spin, weights, running, etc. I don’t have those options on vacation so I usually aim to get 3-4 workouts in running/walking and boot camping!

*Nourish your body well!

I try my best to east as close as possible to what I do when I am at home. I eat 3 meals and a lot of snacks at home so I try and do that while I am away as well. I know if I don’t snack a lot on healthy foods, then I will overeat later.

Plan, plan, plan. Plan as much as you can, but know you can’t plan/control everything and that’s ok!

Like I said about working out in the day, unless I am going out to breakfast I try to start my day with a healthy, filling meal of egg white sandwiches or egg white omelets, and fruit. If I don’t splurge at breakfast I can save it for later in the day!

While on vacation I have at least one treat or splurge a day. When I am visiting my parents there’s always going to be something unhealthy and delicious laying around. The way I see it is a lot of these items are summer only and as long as I am not over doing it, white bread, white pasta, brownies, and other processed foods will not kill me in small amounts

I don’t beat myself up if I overeat, one day is not going to kill me. Trust me. I used to think it would but I have managed to stay the same weight all summer and have really overdone it on some days!

*To booze or not to booze?

If you are going to imbibe try drinking low calorie. I love vodka soda’s, sangria (made with white wine, fruit and club soda), or a low calorie beer

I find it’s also best if you choose to day or night drink, it never ends well when you try to do both in one day :)

Try limiting yourself to drinking only one night on the weekend. If you are away for the week try 3 times.

Do not over do it! You are not going to want to get up for your run in the morning with a hangover!

Well I hope you liked my tips! I try my best to follow these but I’m not perfect so I would love to know some of your tips!!
